This project began with a modest brief. Two teenage sons had outgrown their shared bedroom and its bunk beds. But walking through the 1970s Dutch Colonial, it was clear the house no longer reflected the woman who lived there. It had dark paneling, bulky radiators, an unusable front office and living room, and a cramped galley kitchen unfit for a passionate cook.

So a bedroom refresh became a whole-house transformation. We took the main level down to the studs and adjusted the footprint in key places. Removing a coat closet and relocating a powder room opened the sightline from the front door straight through to the sunny family room. The kitchen expanded into the dining room, and the dining room moved into the unused living room. Wide-plank white oak floors with radiant heat replaced the radiators entirely.

The result is warm, simple, and quietly layered. As I told the magazine, the project is “a great balance of modern elements within a warm, traditional framework.”
